Prior to Monday Night’s home run derby festivities at Kaufman Stadium, ESPN analyst Buster Olney reported via twitter that the Texas Rangers are the favorite to land Cole Hamels this season if the Phillies do in fact trade the 28 year old southpaw.
Hamels is set to become a free agent this off-season if he and the Phillies are unable to come to agreement on a multi-year extension. There is speculation that with an NL east worst 37-50 at the All-Star break, the Phillies and General Manger Ruben Amaro Jr. will look to move Hamels for prospects prior trade deadline.
The addition of Hamels to an already potent Texas team would make the Rangers the clear cut favorite to with the World Series. It remains to be seen if Nolan Ryan and the Rangers front office are willing to part with the number of prospects required to land Hamels.
