Boston general manager Ben Cherrington has gone on the record stating that the Red Sox would consider making sizable moves prior to the July 31st trade deadline.
McDonald writes regarding Boston’s pitching woes: “The Red Sox have scored a major league-leading 479 runs this season but own a 48-48 record and are in last place in the AL East, 9½ games behind the first-place New York Yankees. Boston’s starting pitchers have posted a 4.84 ERA this season, the third-worst mark in the AL.
In addition to Johnson, fellow starting pitcher Anibal Sanchez has also been rumored to be a target of the Red Sox. Sanchez, a seven year veteran with a career record of 44-45, is an excellent strikeout pitcher and would benefit a move to a more potent offense.
